Nature Talk: The MVP of Long Island Fish (Atlantic Menhaden)

  • Moustache Brewing Co. 400 Hallett Avenue Riverhead, NY, 11901 United States (map)

We are stoked to host The Nature Talks, a special series of talks held at the brewery in collaboration with Christopher Paparo, the Fish Guy. On select Thursdays and Fridays, you're invited to learn more about our underwater habitats, ecosystem, Long Island after Sandy and more. Maple Tree BBQ will be in the house during the talks. Each talk will start approximately at sunset, after 8pm. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, as well as some bug spray.

Join us on July 6th for “The MVP of Long Island Fish” (Atlantic Menhaden) with Brandyn Lucca.

The Peconic River Estuary comprises a huge diversity of animals ranging from marine worms living in the seabed to finfish that many people enjoy fishing and subsequently eating during the summer. Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) are one such fish species that are an iconic resident that have a long, rich history in Long Island waters dating back several centuries.

The relative ecological and economic importance of menhaden has commonly resulted in these fish being labeled as “the most important fish in the sea”. This is, in part, evidenced by growing local media attention in the wake of large fish kills occurring in Long Island waters in recent years. If we want to protect this valuable resource, we have to gain more insight into how these fish interact with their environment and identify ways to help improve the health of our local waters.
