Long Island’s Freshwater Fishes – What are they and where did they come from?- Presented by Chart Guthrie, retired NYSDEC fisheries biologist.

Everyone knows that Long Island is surrounded by salt water with a diverse assemblage of saltwater fishes in tis waters, but few realize that Long Island also has over 500 freshwater lakes and ponds and over 30 miles of freshwater streams. Even though the island is surrounded by saltwater, Long island’s freshwaters support 44 species of freshwater fishes. This presentation will cover the freshwater fishes of Long Island, where they came from, how they got here and some of the high points and threats to the freshwater fisheries resources of Long Island.
